Por otro lado, la periodontitis crónica, es una enfermedad infecciosa e inflamatoria que provoca la destrucción progresiva del periodonto de protección e inserción, y es una de las patologías orales con mayor incidencia a nivel mundial. Es por eso que, en este trabajo de tesis, estudiamos estas variables experimentales tanto de forma independiente como en combinación, analizando los efectos recíprocos que pudieran provocar sobre los tejidos orales involucrados. Por otro lado, en los últimos años, se han publicado numerosos trabajos donde se estudian las propiedades antiinflamatorias y pro-homeostáticas del sistema endocannabinoide (SEC) y se ha analizado su participación en patologías inflamatorias e infecciosas. Incluso nuestro grupo de investigación ha estudiado el efecto de la aplicación local de diferentes compuestos moduladores del SEC, motivo por el cual en este trabajo de tesis estudiamos la expresión de los receptores específicos, CBr1 y CBr2, para evaluar posibles cambios en el patrón de expresión tanto en los tejidos periodontales afectados por PE y/o hiposalivación inducida por submandibulectomía, así como en las GSM de ratas afectadas por PE exclusivamente. Los resultados obtenidos indicaron que la hiposalivación produjo efectos deletéreos tanto en el periodonto de protección como en el periodonto de inserción. Los cambios en el tejido óseo no solamente afectaron al hueso alveolar, sino que, además, las mandíbulas modificaron su comportamiento estructural ante una prueba biomecánica realizada sobre ellas. Por su parte, la PE inducida por inyecciones de LPS, produjo daños en el periodonto de protección y provocó niveles de pérdida ósea incrementados con respecto a los controles. Además, la inducción de PE conllevó a una disminución de la respuesta secretoria glandular, debido a cambios bioquímicos. La concomitancia de PE y H no mostró el efecto aditivo que podría esperarse al considerar ambas agresiones por separado, con excepción del nivel de algunos mediadores inflamatorios. Así, cuando coexisten PE y H, en lugar de obtener un resultado aditivo, parece prevalecer el efecto de uno de ellos. A nivel del SEC, en este trabajo concluimos que hay localización constitutiva de CBr1 y CBr2 tanto en el tejido gingival como en la GSM, mientras que se observan cambios en los patrones de expresión génica de ambos receptores en el tejido gingival frente a las dos condiciones fisiopatológicas estudiadas y en la GSM en respuesta a PE.
