Description An account of the resource Resumen: El Queratoquiste Odontogénico (QO) es una patología benigna, reconocida por su comportamiento clínico localmente agresivo, que, sumado a su alta tasa de recurrencia tras el tratamiento quirúrgico, dificulta su manejo. La prohibición por la FDA de la utilización de la solución de Carnoy (SC), ha suscitado un interés creciente en buscar agentes químicos alternativos, como el 5-Fluorouracilo (5-FU) y la solución de Carnoy modificada (SCM). Realizamos una búsqueda bibliográfica para evaluar la eficacia del 5-FU como terapia coadyuvante tras la cirugía del QO. Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica de artículos científicos publicados en los últimos 10 años en diversas bases de datos. Se incluyeron todos los estudios que mencionaban el uso de 5-FU en el tratamiento del QO. De los 147 artículos identificados al principio, cuatro cumplieron con los criterios para la evaluación final. Se extrajeron los datos pertinentes y se analizaron en relación con la tasa de recurrencia y la parestesia nerviosa. No se reportaron recurrencias en los casos tratados con 5-FU, y la incidencia de parestesia nerviosa fue del 20% (sin casos permanentes). Esta búsqueda bibliográfica ha mostrado resultados iniciales prometedores para el 5-FU como terapía coadyuvante; sin embargo, se aconseja tener precaución debido a ciertas falencias no consideradas en las publicaciones actuales, como pueden ser el tamaño de la muestra, periodos de seguimiento y perfil de seguridad de la droga, por nombrar algunos. No existen artículos científicos que comparen directamente al 5- FU con la SC. Abstract: The Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) is a benign pathology recognized for its locally aggressive clinical behavior, which, combined with its high recurrence rate after surgical treatment, makes its management challenging. The FDA’s ban on the use of Carnoy’s solution (CS) has sparked growing interest in seeking alternative chemical agents, such as 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and Modified Carnoy’s Solution (MCS). We conducted a literature search to evaluate the efficacy of 5-FU as an adjunct therapy following OKC surgery. A search was carried out for scientific articles published in the last 10 years across various databases. All studies mentioning the use of 5-FU in the treatment of OKC were included. Out of the 147 articles initially identified, four met the criteria for the final evaluation. Relevant data were extracted and analyzed concerning the recurrence rate and nerve paresthesia. No recurrences were reported in cases treated with 5-FU, and the incidence of nerve paresthesia was 20% (with no permanent cases). This literature search has shown promising initial results for 5-FU as an adjunct therapy; however, caution is advised due to certain shortcomings that current publications do not address, such as sample size, follow-up periods, and the safety profile of the drug, to name a few.
