Description An account of the resource Resumen: La amelogénesis imperfecta (AI) se define como un grupo de trastornos hereditarios clínica y etiológicamente heterogéneos, derivados de mutaciones genéticas, que se caracteriza por anomalías cualitativas y cuantitativas del esmalte, pudiendo afectar la dentición primaria y/o permanente. El tratamiento del paciente con AI es complejo y multidisciplinario. Supone un desafío para el odontólogo, ya que por lo general están involucradas todas las piezas dentarias y afecta no solo la salud bucodental sino también el aspecto emocional y psicológico de los pacientes. Objetivo: describir el tratamiento preventivo y rehabilitador realizado en una paciente preescolar con diagnóstico de AI hipomineralizada. Relato del caso: paciente de sexo femenino de 3 años, que concurrió en demanda de atención a la Cátedra de Odontología Integral Niños de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (FOUBA), cuyo motivo de consulta fue la apariencia estética y la hipersensibilidad de sus piezas dentarias. Durante el examen clínico intraoral, se observó que todas las piezas dentarias presentaban un esmalte rugoso, blando, con irregularidades y una coloración amarronada, compatible con diagnóstico de AI tipo III hipomineralizada. Conclusión: El tratamiento rehabilitador de la AI en pacientes preescolares estará dirigido a intervenir de manera integral y temprana para aliviar los síntomas, resolver la apariencia estética, restablecer la función, evitar las repercusiones sociales y emocionales y acompañar a los niños y sus familias. Se destaca la importancia de comprenderla no solo como una anomalía estructural del esmalte sino como una condición que impacta de manera desfavorable en la calidad de vida de los pacientes en crecimiento y desarrollo. Abstract: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a set of hereditary disorders with diverse causes, resulting from genetic mutations. It is characterized by anomalies in the development of enamel, which can affect both primary and permanent dentition in terms of quantity and quality. Treating patients with AI is complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Dentists face challenges as all teeth are generally affected, impacting oral health and the patient’s emotional and psychological well-being. Objective: This report aims to describe the preventive and rehabilitative treatment provided to a preschool patient diagnosed with hypomineralized AI. Case report: The patient was a 3-year-old girl who sought dental care at the Department of Dentistry for Children at the School of Dentistry of the University of Buenos Aires due to aesthetic concerns and tooth hypersensitivity. Upon intraoral clinical examination, it was observed that all her teeth had rough, soft enamel with irregularities and a brownish color, consistent with a diagnosis of type III hypomineralized Amelogenesis Imperfecta. Conclusion: Rehabilitative treatment for AI in preschool patients should focus on early and comprehensive intervention to alleviate symptoms, improve aesthetic appearance, restore function, prevent social and emotional impacts, and provide support for patients and their families.
