Nuestro interés sobre la temática ha sido motivado por diferentes elementos. En primer lugar, como se mencionó en la sección de Antecedentes, la gran movilidad actual de la población entre diferentes regiones del planeta juega un relevante papel en la propagación global de epidemias (Arino et al., 2007; Riley, 2007). Por otro lado, existen escenarios donde la distribución espacial de la población y/o su movilidad, también pueden tener una importante implicancia sobre la transmisión de enfermedades infectocontagiosas, como los sistemas carcelarios o las egaciudades. Finalmente, aunque hoy existe un creciente interés por el desarrollo de modelos epidemiológicos especiales, la investigación en este campo sigue siendo escasa en relación a la relevancia que presenta (Arino et al., 2007).
