Una de ellas es la de actuar como restauración intermedia, es decir aquella que, sin llegar a ser definitiva, presta un servicio durante un tiempo prolongado. Para lograrlo el material debe tener adecuada resistencia a la abrasión. Esta es posible evaluarla con métodos diferentes, aunque debe complementarse con valores adecuados en otras características mecánicas para evitar pérdidas en la forma anatómica de la restauración.
